Drilling and installing the
steel stakes |
Installing steel stakes
Footings are laid out on the rock, and using a spray can of
paint, stake
locations are marked. With deeper footings, decrease the distance between
the stakes. An electric hammer
drill with a 7/8” bit is used to drill stake
holes. Each hole takes about 2 minutes to drill
(in granite), with 100 holes taking 3 hours.
The
steel stakes are placed into the holes, and
the metal stakes screwed to the 2x4s at the
correct height. Set the 2x4s at the minimum grade to clear the rocks,
as footing thickness is not typically a requirement when forming on rock.
If using rebar for stakes, use
a 3/4" conduit strap to attach the stake to the 2x4.
